Leeds Youth Council members – Aiden, Jade and Tom – meet with Councillor Richard Brett, Leader (Alternate) of Leeds City Council. The young people are currently undertaking a programme of work in partnership with Leeds City Council’s Equality Team and have been examining the issue of Equality and Diversity in relation to the city’s elected members. They were invited to meet with Councillor Brett to discuss their findings to date. The discussion included a strong recommendation that the council chambers should be made fully accessible for people with physical disabilities. They also stated that there should be more education for both adults and young people around local government and the role of a councillor – this would then hopefully lead to a more diverse range of people standing for election.
