Shannon 's Story
Shannon's story in her own words
When I first heard about Her Future, I wanted to join because I liked the idea of having a group of young women together where people could make friends without being judged.
One of my favourite things about Her Future is being able to meet other young women and build friendships in a safe and welcoming environment. It’s somewhere you can be yourself without feeling pressure to fit in or be perfect.
Since joining, I’ve made new friends and become more comfortable around other people. The group has had a positive impact on my wellbeing because it’s given me a safe space away from peer pressure and bullying. Knowing there is somewhere I can go where people are supportive and accepting has made a real difference.
One of the opportunities I am most proud of was taking part in a Youth Voice project where I met a government minister and spoke on behalf of young people about youth loneliness. When I was first asked, I was amazed because I didn’t think I was the best person for it. Looking back, it turned out to be a great opportunity and taught me that anything is possible.
Her Future has also helped me feel more confident speaking up for myself and other young people. I’ve had the chance to meet inspirational women and see what women can achieve in all areas of life, which has made me feel more positive about my own future.
To me, Her Future is a safe place where young women and young people who identify as female can feel welcomed, supported and accepted without judgment.
My message to other young women thinking about joining the Her Future programme would be:
“Just come and see if you like it. If you need someone to talk to, I’m here, and you won’t be judged on anything – it’s a judgement-free zone.”
