Young people in Little London and Woodhouse are leading by example after coming together to clean up their local area.
The litter pick is the latest step in a series of street forum sessions, where young people have been sharing their views on how to improve their neighbourhood. Ideas have ranged from big changes, like better transport links and improved park lighting, to smaller, everyday actions that everyone can take part in. Young people felt that by working together they could make their community a more inviting place to spend time and feel proud of.
This week, 21 young people took part in the litter pick, each contributing in their own way.
Young people also reflected on why a cleaner area is important to them. Feedback included:
- “Wildlife friendly”
- “it’s just nicer”
- “it maintains the community”
- “it gives it a nice energy”
- “it makes you feel like you can hang out in the space”
Local residents also shared their appreciation to the young people describing their gratitude for young people getting involved in making their community a cleaner more welcoming place.
This project highlights the positive impact young people can have when they are given the opportunity to shape their community and shows that even small actions can make a big difference.
