ESOL students take action to support Barnsley’s homeless community while building new skills and life experiences.
A group of ESOL students has made a meaningful impact in their community by creating a social action project to support homeless individuals in Barnsley. Motivated by their lived experiences and a strong desire to give back, the young people designed and delivered a project that provided practical help and raised awareness of homelessness in the area.
As part of their efforts, the group packed and donated essential support packages, including sanitary products and clothing, to Barnsley’s Rough Sleeper Project. This initiative was made possible with the support of The Youth Association, Barnsley College, and Life Experience, whose contributions were invaluable.
Alongside their social action work, the young people also took part in a team-building hike to the Peak District. For many, it was their first experience of the English countryside, and they learned map-reading skills to navigate up Mam Tor.
A huge thank you to the group for their dedication and to all partners involved in making this project a success. Together, they’ve shown how young people can lead efforts to support their community while creating positive experiences for themselves.
